The Format

What is a couples therapy intensive?

Couples therapy at Trauma Care Psychology offers two formats depending on your needs. Weekly or biweekly sessions work best for partners who want steady, consistent support to improve their relationship over time, ideal for recurring conflicts, communication challenges, or emotional distance. Couples therapy intensives are specifically designed for couples who feel stuck, overwhelmed, hopeless, or disconnected and who are ready for meaningful, accelerated progress. These intensive sessions give partners the space, safety, and uninterrupted time needed to work on a deeper level through long-standing patterns, strengthen emotional connection, and create lasting change.

Is This Right for You

When an intensive is the right fit

Traditional weekly therapy can be helpful, but sometimes relationship challenges require deeper, more concentrated work. Intensives provide dedicated time to address core issues without the stop-and-start of weekly sessions, accelerated breakthroughs for attachment or trauma-related patterns, stabilization and clarity during high-conflict phases, and a structured, evidence-based plan tailored to your unique relationship.

An intensive may be a good fit if you:

  • Feel stuck or hopeless and want meaningful progress in a shorter timeframe
  • Have tried weekly therapy but find the week-to-week gap disrupts momentum
  • Are navigating a relationship crisis and need rapid stabilization
  • Have limited availability for weekly sessions due to work, travel, or location
  • Want to address a specific issue in depth without spreading the work across months
  • Are preparing for or recovering from a major life transition together

Research on concentrated therapy formats suggests that couples who receive the same number of therapy hours grouped intensively at the start of treatment show larger positive effects and lower relapse rates than those who receive the same hours distributed weekly over time.

Intensives are also well-suited to couples who travel to Toronto specifically for treatment, or who prefer to do deep relational work away from the week-to-week rhythm of regular sessions.

Follow-up sessions are recommended after an intensive to consolidate progress. We typically suggest at least one session in the month following, and another at three months.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions about couples intensives

Regular couples therapy typically involves weekly or biweekly 50-minute sessions. Intensives provide several hours or days of consecutive, uninterrupted work, giving couples the depth and continuity that weekly sessions often cannot. Many couples find that a full day or two in therapy moves them further than months of weekly appointments. Research supports this: concentrated early therapy hours tend to produce larger effects and lower relapse rates than the same hours distributed over time.

The Half-Day Focused Reset works best when there is one specific issue to address. The 1-Day Deeper Exploration suits couples stuck in repeating patterns or emotional disconnection. The 2-Day Relationship Transformation is the right choice when the goal is deep, lasting change across multiple areas of the relationship. If you are unsure which fits, that is completely normal. Our intake call will help you work that out before you commit to anything.

Yes, and many couples find this combination particularly effective. Intensives can complement ongoing therapy, provide a concentrated boost when progress has stalled, or serve as a standalone intervention. If you are working with another therapist, our clinician can coordinate as needed to make sure both approaches are working in the same direction.

The approach is tailored to the couple's specific history and goals, not applied from a template. We draw from Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), DBT-informed couples work, trauma-informed frameworks, and Cognitive-Behavioural approaches as appropriate. If you are already engaged in a specific program such as CBCT or SAGE, intensives can be incorporated into that existing structure.

Yes. Couples intensives are conjoint: both partners attend all sessions together. The work focuses on the dynamic between both partners, and meaningful change in that dynamic requires both people in the room. Some couples arrive feeling very differently about being there, and that is okay. The therapy makes space for where each person actually is.

Most extended health benefit plans cover sessions with registered psychologists and psychotherapists. We provide detailed receipts for all sessions to support reimbursement. If you are unsure what your plan covers, you are welcome to ask during your intake call and we will help you figure it out. Visit our Fees and Coverage page for full details.
