General Questions & Questions About Individual Therapy

  • Trauma therapy is a form of psychotherapy designed to help people recover from difficult or overwhelming life experiences such as abuse, accidents, loss, violence, racial-trauma, immigration and others. At our Trauma Care Psychology, we use evidence-based trauma treatments, meaning there is research supporting the effectiveness of these treatment. This includes CPT, CBT, and emotion-focused approaches, to reduce symptoms like anxiety, depression, flashbacks, and emotional numbness. Trauma therapy helps you process painful experiences safely and rebuild a sense of calm, connection, and resilience. To learn more about treatments visit our Services Page.

  • You may benefit from trauma therapy if you notice symptoms such as:

    • Feeling constantly on edge, anxious, or unsafe

    • Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories

    • Difficulty with trust, relationships, or intimacy

    • Emotional numbness, disconnection, or shame

    • Unexplained physical symptoms like headaches, fatigue, or tension

If these experiences interfere with your daily life, relationships, or work, specialized trauma treatment can help. Read more about the different types of treatments we offer on our Services Page.

  • Our trauma therapists specialize in helping clients with:

    • Childhood physical, sexual or emotional trauma and attachment wounds

    • Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

    • Survivors of emotional, physical or emotional abuse, neglect, or domestic violence

    • Grief, loss, and sudden life changes

    • First responder and workplace trauma

    • Immigration and cultural trauma

    • Discrimination-related trauma

    • And other types of difficult life experiences that leave a mark

We recognize that trauma looks different for everyone and tailor therapy to your unique needs.

  • PTSD often develops after a single traumatic event, such as an accident, natural disaster, or assault. Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is linked to ongoing or repeated trauma, often beginning in childhood. Both conditions may cause anxiety, flashbacks, and emotional distress. C-PTSD in addition often includes deeper struggles with identity, shame, and relationships. Our therapists provide specialized care for both.

  • At the Trauma Care Psychology, we offer evidence-based therapies. This means that there is research into these treatments so we know they are safe and helpful.

For a full list of our treatments please see our Services Page.

    Examples include:

    • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories.

    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): addresses unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors.

    • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): addresses beliefs about the traumatic event which keep us “stuck” and replaying these events.

    • Emotion-Focused Therapy: helps process painful emotions caused by the trauma which are stored in the body.

  • The length of trauma therapy depends on your personal history, goals, and symptoms. Some clients notice progress within weeks, while others benefit from longer-term therapy. We will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that feels safe and sustainable.

To learn more about the different lengths of the specific treatments we offer please visit our Services Page.

  • Yes. We provide secure online trauma therapy sessions for clients across Ontario, Quebec and The Maritimes or whoever prefers to receive care from home. Virtual trauma therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions and may be especially helpful if you live outside of Toronto, have mobility challenges, or need flexible scheduling. Some research suggests that virtual therapy for trauma-related issues actually lowers drop-out rates.

If you would prefer in-person services, then our office is located at 3250 Bloor Street West, Etobicoke, ON.

  • Getting started is simple:

    1. Contact us through our website, phone or booking link to schedule a free consultation.

    2. Our intake coordinator will match you with a therapist who fits your needs, or you can take a look at Our Team online and schedule a free consultation call with a therapist you believe is a good fit.

    3. At the first session, your therapist will gather important information and will create a safe, personalized therapy plan for you based on your goals.

  • At Trauma Care, our team specializes in trauma recovery, PTSD treatment, and complex trauma therapy. We combine clinical expertise with deep compassion to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for recovery. Our therapists understand the impact of trauma not only on mental health but also on the body, relationships, and identity. We believe recovery is possible for everyone.

We take pride in our trauma-informed intake and assessment process which helps therapists come up with the most suitable plan for you to meet your goals.

  • In your first session, your trauma therapist will gently explore your history, current struggles, and therapy goals. You won’t need to share intimate detail of past traumatic events. We will focus more on the impact these experiences are having in the present. Sessions will move at your pace.

We’ll also provide psychoeducation on trauma and the nervous system, so you can better understand your symptoms and how therapy can help.

You can also expect for us to send you some questionnaires to better understand your symptoms and to also keep track of progress over time to make sure that the therapy we are providing is actually helpful to you. And if not, then we will change course and explore other options with you that might be more effective.

  • It’s completely normal to feel nervous or even scared before beginning trauma therapy. Many people worry that talking about past experiences will be overwhelming, painful or re-traumatizing.

At Trauma Care Psychology, we move at your pace, you don’t have to share details before you’re ready and we will never push you into doing so. Our trauma-informed intake and assessment is designed so we discuss symptoms you are experiencing in the present rather than disclosing details about painful past events.

Our trauma-informed therapists focus on creating safety first, teaching grounding and coping strategies, and giving you choice and control throughout the process. Feeling hesitant is part of the journey, and we’ll work together to make therapy feel supportive, not re-traumatizing.

  • While our clinic specializes in trauma therapy and PTSD treatment, our therapists are also trained to support clients with a wide range of mental health concerns. We provide therapy for anxiety, depression, grief, emotional sensitivity, perinatal concerns, perfectionism, relationship challenges, stress, and personal growth. You do not need to identify as “having trauma” to begin therapy with us. See our Services Page for more information on what types of challenges we work with.

  • It’s completely normal to feel unsure or even scared about beginning therapy. Change and recovery can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve carried painful experiences for a long time.

At Trauma Care Psychology, therapy doesn’t have to mean diving straight into traumatic memories. Many clients start by learning practical coping strategies, grounding skills, and emotional regulation tools to help them feel more stable and in control.

We also offer a free Grounding Toolkit to get you started at your own pace. This resource provides simple exercises you can use right away to calm your nervous system and reduce stress. When you’re ready, therapy can move gently into deeper healing, but the first step can simply be learning how to feel safer in your day-to-day life.

Questions about Couples Therapy

  • Couples therapy is a type of relationship counseling that helps partners improve communication, resolve conflict, and strengthen intimacy.

At Trauma Care Psychology, our couples therapists integrate trauma-informed approaches to help couples rebuild trust, navigate emotional triggers, and create healthier connections.

  • Couples intensives are short-term, focused therapy sessions designed to accelerate progress in a relationship. Unlike weekly sessions, which meet for an hour or 90 minutes at a time, intensives involve extended blocks of therapy, for example, a full day or a weekend, so couples can dive deeply into issues and make faster breakthroughs.

When to consider a couples intensive:

    • You’re experiencing high-conflict or recurring arguments that feel stuck.

    • You want to address a specific challenge quickly, such as intimacy issues or major trust breaches.

    • You need intensive support for a critical period, like before marriage, after a major life transition, or during a relationship crisis.

When weekly therapy may be better:

    • You prefer gradual progress and reflection between sessions.

    • You want ongoing support for long-term growth, communication skill-building, or emotional regulation.

    • You have a busier schedule and need regular, manageable sessions over time.

Both approaches are tailored to your relationship’s needs, and your therapist can help you determine which format is most effective for your goals.

  • Yes. At Trauma Care Psychology, we begin couples therapy with a comprehensive assessment to understand each partner’s perspective, relationship patterns, and goals. This typically includes:

    • One joint session to explore relationship history, dynamics, communication challenges, and shared goals.

    • Individual sessions for each partner to discuss personal history, concerns, and any trauma or emotional triggers that may impact the relationship.

    • Questionnaires and standardized assessments to evaluate relationship satisfaction, conflict patterns, intimacy, and emotional connection.

This assessment helps the therapist create a personalized treatment plan, whether you choose weekly sessions or a couples intensive, ensuring the therapy is tailored to your unique relationship needs.

  • Unresolved trauma can impact intimacy, trust, and emotional regulation in relationships. Partners may experience frequent arguments, withdrawal, or emotional disconnection. Couples therapy helps both partners understand trauma’s effect on their relationship and develop skills to repair attachment wounds and rebuild safety.

  • Yes. Couples therapy addresses challenges like low sexual desire, emotional distance, or discomfort with physical intimacy, especially when trauma or stress is involved. Therapists help partners communicate needs, rebuild trust, and strengthen emotional and physical connection in safe and structured ways.

For more information on the different types of couples therapy we offer, please visit our Services Page.

  • The length of therapy depends on the couple’s goals and challenges. Traditional weekly couples therapy may take several months, while couples intensives can deliver meaningful breakthroughs in just a few focused sessions. At Trauma Care Clinic, we tailor therapy to your unique relationship needs.

For more information on the different types of couples therapy we offer please visit our Services Page.

  • No. While our therapists are trained in trauma-informed approaches, we provide couples therapy for a wide range of relationship challenges, including communication problems, frequent conflict, intimacy issues, and general stress in relationships. You do not need to have a trauma history to benefit from our couples therapy services.

Questions About Fees & Finances

  • Our therapy fees vary depending on the therapist’s training and session length. At Trauma Care, sessions are provided by licensed psychologists, psychotherapists, and supervised therapists-in-training, which allows us to offer different fee levels.

Our fees for individual therapy range from $170-$250 per hour. Our fees for couples therapy range from $180-$275 per hour.

Please contact us to learn more about our current rates for specific therapists.

  • No. In Ontario, individual and couples psychotherapy or trauma therapy is not covered by OHIP. It is however a tax-deductible service.

Many private insurance plans cover sessions with licensed psychologists or psychotherapists. We provide detailed receipts for insurance reimbursement.

If cost is a concern, we offer limited sliding scale therapy spots, flexible payment options, and skill-based resources like our Grounding Toolkit to make therapy more accessible. Please reach out for more information.

  • Yes. We believe therapy should be accessible. That’s why we reserve a limited number of sliding scale therapy spots for clients who may not be able to afford full fees. Eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis and often includes factors such as:

    • Not having extended health insurance coverage

    • Low or reduced household income

    • Being a student, newcomer, or facing financial hardship

Sliding scale spots are limited, but we do our best to accommodate clients in need. There may be a waitlist for the sliding-scale spots. Please reach out to discuss availability and whether you may qualify.

  • If you don’t qualify, our team can help explore insurance reimbursement and flexible payment plans to make therapy more accessible. We also offer skill-based programs and resources, like our Grounding Toolkit, that clients can use while saving for therapy sessions.
