Couples Therapy for PTSD (CBCT Program) in Ontario

Did you know couples therapy is an effective treatment for PTSD and trauma-related challenges? Cognitive-Behavioral Conjoint Therapy (CBCT) helps couples navigate the effects of trauma together, reduce conflict, and rebuild emotional connection.

Our CBTC Program

A structured, evidence-based therapy designed for couples where one, or both partners have PTSD. It aims to reduce PTSD symptoms and improve relationship satisfaction by involving both partners in the healing process.

Key Features

  • Joint Sessions: Both partners participate together, fostering mutual understanding and support.

  • Skill Building: Couples learn communication strategies, emotional regulation techniques, and methods to manage trauma-related stress.

  • Trauma Processing: The therapy includes structured discussions about the traumatic event, allowing the couple to process it together.

  • Homework Assignments: Couples are given tasks to complete between sessions, reinforcing skills and promoting progress.

Why Choose CBCT?

Traumatic events impact more than the individual, they impact the relationships with the people closest to us. Often, when one or both partners struggle with PTSD, the relationship takes a toll and conflict arises. Evidence-based CBCT for PTSD and trauma-related challenges helps couples improve relationship satisfaction, manage trauma-related stress, and build stronger emotional bonds.

CBCT can help with:

  • Improved PTSD symptoms

  • Enhanced relationship satisfaction

  • Increased emotional intimacy and trust

CBCT often lasts 12-16 sessions and has been shown to be effective in helping couples navigate the challenges of PTSD, leading to better outcomes for both individuals and their relationships.

Who is CBCT For?

Cognitive-Behavioral Conjoint Therapy (CBCT) is designed for couples who are:

  • Experiencing PTSD or trauma-related symptoms that affect the relationship

  • Struggling with communication difficulties, conflict, or emotional distance

  • Seeking to process trauma together safely with professional guidance

  • Wanting to strengthen trust, intimacy, and emotional connection

  • Looking for an evidence-based, structured approach to support both partners’ healing

Cognitive-Behavioral Conjoint Therapy (CBCT) for PTSD was developed to address the impact of trauma on both individuals and their intimate relationships. It was created to fill a treatment gap: while many therapies reduce individual PTSD symptoms, few focus on relationship functioning. CBCT combines cognitive-behavioral strategies with conjoint therapy techniques, helping couples safely process trauma together, improve communication, and manage conflict.

Research shows that CBCT is an evidence-based therapy that reduces PTSD symptoms, strengthens emotional bonds, and increases relationship satisfaction. Clinical trials demonstrate that involving partners in therapy supports both trauma recovery and relational health, making CBCT a structured, safe, and effective approach for couples navigating PTSD and its effects on their relationship.

How CBCT Helps

Cognitive-Behavioral Conjoint Therapy (CBCT) helps couples affected by PTSD or trauma work together to heal both individual symptoms and their relationship. The therapy combines structured cognitive-behavioral techniques with conjoint sessions that engage both partners in the recovery process.

  • Teaching couples about PTSD, trauma responses, and the impact on relationships.

  • Helping partners express emotions, needs, and concerns safely and effectively.

  • Strategies to reduce avoidance, increase positive interactions, and manage conflict.

  • Identifying and challenging unhelpful thoughts related to trauma and relationship patterns.

  • Safe, guided exploration of trauma-related memories and their relational impact.

  • Building long-term strategies to sustain relationship gains and coping skills.
